Meet Dr. Nelson

I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and a Nationally Certified Counselor specializing in individual, couples, and family therapy.  I am a private practitioner working with a broad spectrum of clients. Among my areas of expertise are mood disorders (anxiety, depression, etc), stress management, addiction issues, eating disorders, trauma counseling, ADHD, body image concerns, relationship issues, cultural adjustments, grief counseling, and work and career issues.  I am also a Board Approved Clinical Supervisor who provides supervision to associate clinicians.  Lastly, I provide training, consultation, and speaking engagements related to mental health concerns and/or any personal and professional topics of concern.

Counseling Style

My counseling approach is generally client-centered, in which I emphasize the individual’s strengths and resources.  My use of integrative counseling orientation is entrenched in cognitive-behavioral, person-centered, motivational interviewing, and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) with extreme interest in evidence-based counseling approaches.  Through motivation and by creating awareness, I believe the individual is capable of growth and can realize their potential.  Counseling can be an uncomfortable situation for some clients; therefore, creating trust and respect are key in the journey of the client and counselor together.  Exploring sensitive and important life experiences are much easier processed when done with respect.  The counseling process requires the client’s active involvement as well as effort to change maladaptive thoughts and behaviors.  I am also an interactive, solution-focused therapist. My therapeutic approach is to provide support and practical feedback to help clients effectively address personal life challenges.  I integrate complementary methodologies and techniques to offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each client. With compassion and understanding, I work with each individual to help them build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing.

In addition to being a prominent therapist, I am a national speaker on topics but not limited to:

Acculturation/Multiculturalism concerns; ADHD; Bullying; Caring for the Terminally ill; Eating Disorders; Trauma Counseling;  Clinical Supervision; Counselor Wellness and Secondary Trauma; Creativity in Counseling and Supervision; Relationship and Marital Satisfaction; Stress Management,  Self-Harm and other Non-Suicidal Self-Injury.
